During the trip, I was able to spend time with local entrepreneurs seeking to address issues stemming from poverty. I was truly amazed the unique approaches designed to improve the lives of youth in South Africa. For example, Leon Mdiya of Future Space Solutions was involved with efforts to create sustainable villages that will provide housing to children orphaned due to the AIDS epidemic plaguing the nation. It was comforting to see that others are tackling the myriad of issues related to poverty in their own unique way. Similar to Save The Villages, these entrepreneurs desire to impact the lives of youth and counteract the effects of poverty.
My overall impression of South Africa was favorable to an extent. I was in awe of the country’s beautiful landscapes and scenery, and was intrigued by the level of development and established infrastructure. But, my observation of the economic situation in South Africa led me to conclude that efforts to address rampant poverty are still very much in need.
